Chancellor Carol Folt asked Malone to serve as the office’s interim director. The Equal Opportunity/ADA Office administers policies protecting equal opportunity and access to all students, faculty and staff in an environment that prohibits discrimination or harassment.
“This office’s work to ensure access and equity in academic programs and employment practices is integral to everything we do at Carolina,” Folt said. “It is important to have a member of our senior leadership team directing those efforts, and there is no one more capable to take on that responsibility than Brenda Malone. Brenda’s background makes her uniquely qualified to build on Ann’s record of distinction in making Carolina a welcoming, inclusive community in which to work and learn.”
Folt will appoint a committee to search for candidates to lead the EEO/ADA functions for the University.
Malone, who has more than 30 years of experience in human resources and labor relations, came to Carolina in 2007 from the City University of New York, where she served as vice chancellor for faculty and staff relations. She has an extensive background in managing classification and compensation, labor relations, benefits, payroll, and training and development, as well as compliance and diversity.
Among other initiatives, Malone will be involved with the task force charged with improving the way the University responds to sexual misconduct. Christi Hurt, interim Title IX coordinator, is leading that work, which is ongoing. The task force will present its findings jointly to Folt and Malone.
