Advising

Advising hours for Fall 2008 preregistration

Undergraduate students in the Department of Asian Studies receive advising from two main sources:

  • Academic Advising serves students in the General College (all students in their first two years) and the College of Arts and Sciences. (Juniors and seniors who have entered one of the professional schools will get advising in their school, but will also get advising from Academic Advising with respect to their Asian Studies major or minor.) Within Academic Advising, Asian Studies students should see advisors on Team 60. Note that Academic Advising has temporarily moved out of Steele Building due to renovations; Team 60 is currently headquartered in Coates Building (on Franklin St. across from Morehead Planetarium).
  • Faculty advisors in the Department of Asian Studies. All Asian Studies majors (including those whose second major is in Asian Studies) are required to meet with a faculty advisor every semester prior to registration for the next semester.

Asian Studies faculty advisors: Currently, the department rotates advising duties among the faculty (rather than assigning each student to a permanent advisor), so your faculty advisor may change from one semester to the next. Students are assigned to faculty advisors based on which major/concentration within the department they are pursuing. As registration draws near, Asian Studies majors will receive an email letting them know which advisor to see; if you are ever unsure about which Asian Studies faculty member you should be seeing for advising, please contact Lori Harris in the Asian Studies office. For fall 2008, faculty advisors are assigned as follows:

  • Interdisciplinary Asian Studies majors and Japanese concentration majors should see Dr. Mark Driscoll .
Regular office hours T 12:30-1:30 and more TBA.
  • Arab Cultures concentration majors should see Dr. Nadia Yaqub .
