Public Transit: Our part of campus is easily accessible by free Chapel Hill Transit buses, serving the UNC campus, Chapel Hill, and Carrboro, and also by Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) buses, serving Durham and Research Triangle Park (RTP) directly, and RDU airport and Raleigh via a connection at RTP.
Chapel Hill bus routes serving Franklin St. near New West: CL, D, F, HS, M, NU, U. Also the RU route serves Cameron Ave. near New West.
Chapel Hill bus routes serving Columbia St. near New West: A, CL, CW, D, G, J, N, NS, NU, T, U.
TTA bus routes serving both Franklin St. and Columbia St. near New West: 402 and 412 (from Durham to RTP), 403 and 413 (from RTP to Durham).
See www.gotriangle.org for complete route, schedule, and fare information on all Triangle-area transit services, an online trip planner that will help you find the best route to your destination, and a plethora of other useful information.
Bicycling: Bike racks are available at numerous locations on campus for securing your bikes. The bike rack at New West is outside the west entrance. Follow these links for more information on local bike paths and biking on campus.
Parking: The nearest visitor parking to New West is in the Swain pay lot, off Cameron Ave. Also nearby are meters along Franklin St. or the Morehead Planetarium pay lot (this is the lot marked "Sundial" on the map above, because it has a giant sundial in the center of it), off Franklin St. If these are full, there is usually space in the Town of Chapel Hill pay lots on Rosemary St. (the next parallel street north of Franklin St.), a reasonably short walk away. The UNC Visitors' Center has more information on visitor parking on and around campus. Note that any and all parking that normally exists around campus may be closed off in the event of basketball or other special events.
Parking is free in the park and ride lots operated by the Town of Chapel Hill and connected to campus via the free Chapel Hill bus service. The Chapel Hill Transit website has full park and ride information, including a map of locations. Some of these lots usually fill up early in the morning; the Eubanks Road lot, served by the NS bus, is more likely to have spaces available.
Airport: The nearest airport to UNC is Raleigh-Durham International (RDU), about 18 miles from Chapel Hill. A taxi from RDU to Chapel Hill might cost around $35. The Triangle Transit Authority (TTA) also has RDU shuttle bus service.
Driving directions:
All these directions lead to the Swain visitor parking lot, which is the one nearest New West.
From I-85/Durham & points north: From I-85 South, take exit 174B (on the left!) toward Chapel Hill, onto U.S. Hwy. 15-501. Take US 15-501 south; about 1.6 miles past the I-40 interchange, the road will fork. Take the right fork, which will have a sign for Franklin Street. Continue on Franklin St. for 2-3 miles. Turn left at the light on Columbia St., then left at the second light onto Cameron Ave. The first left leads into the Swain lot.
From I-40/Raleigh, RTP, & points east: From I-40 West, take exit 273A toward Chapel Hill, onto NC-54 West. Continue on NC-54 for about 5 miles; it will become Raleigh Rd. and then South Rd. as you approach the campus. When you pass the bell tower on your left you will be approaching the intersection of South Rd. and Columbia St. Turn right at the light onto Columbia. Go 1 block north on Columbia and turn right at the light onto Cameron Ave. The first left leads into the Swain lot.
From I-40/Winston-Salem, Greensboro, & points west: From I-40 East, take exit 266 onto Martin Luther King Jr. Blvd. (formerly Airport Rd.), which at that point is also Hwy. 86. Bear right at the exit so that you get onto MLK heading south. Continue on MLK for several miles; along the way it will become Columbia St. When you reach the intersection of Columbia and Cameron, turn left at the light onto Cameron Ave. The first left leads into the Swain lot.
From I-85/Charlotte & points south: Take I-85 North; around Greensboro it will merge with I-40 East and they will be the same road for a while. When they separate, follow I-40 instead of I-85, and see the directions above.
Handicap accessibility: New West is a handicap-accessible building. Two of the three entrances (the south and west entrances) are accessible. The elevator is located at the west end of the building.
If you have a state-issued handicap parking permit, you may park in the regularly marked handicap visitor spaces; there are a few each in the Swain and Morehead parking lots (see Parking instructions above). You are not entitled to park in the spaces with the red UNC Disability Permit signs unless you have a UNC-issued permit.
