I Serve – how do you?

The I Serve campaign serves as a way to celebrate the vast amount of public service undertaken by Carolina students, staff, faculty and alumni.

Carolina senior Cayce Dorrier, president of the APPLES Service-Learning program, has been involved in community service for most of her life. Through APPLES, a student-led program at UNC-Chapel Hill that transforms educational experiences by connecting academic learning and public service, the chemistry major has participated in the community with everything from Battle Park workdays to Hunger Lunch, and has seen the diversity of needs that exist in our area. Most importantly, her participation with APPLES has taught her how she can continue serving after graduation.

“I have learned how I can connect my passion for service with my passion for science, and I hope to continue learning from my communities throughout my career as a scientific researcher,” Dorrier said.

Dorrier wants to share her service experiences – and wants others to share, too.

That’s why she, along with a volunteer committee at the Carolina Center for Public Service, developed the I Serve campaign, a simple way to celebrate the vast amount of public service undertaken by Carolina students, staff, faculty and alumni. This campaign honors the 15-year anniversary of the Carolina Center for Public Service and the 25-year anniversary of the APPLES Service-Learning program, which both have facilitated service opportunities on Carolina’s campus for decades.

The I Serve campaign highlights campus community members and why they enjoy giving back. Those who have joined the campaign to share their reasons for service will be featured in the coming weeks and include Chancellor Carol L. Folt, Provost James W. Dean, Jr., former basketball student-athlete Antawn Jamison, Student Body President Andrew Powell and Athletic Director Bubba Cunningham.

To join the campaign, post your photos on one of the listed social media pages or contact Cayce Dorrier or Rhonda Beatty. The I Serve campaign is meant not only to celebrate all of the ways UNC serves, but to inspire more people on campus to serve and provide them with examples of how and where.
