Meet the inaugural Provost Distinguished Faculty Leaders
The five faculty members selected will participate in professional development activities designed to prepare them for leadership roles.
This spring, the Office of the Provost launched the Provost Distinguished Faculty Leaders program to help faculty become better leaders. Participants enhance their leadership abilities by collaborating with the provost’s office on projects and participate in professional development activities to learn more about higher-education processes, issues, ideas and challenges.
Here’s a look at the program’s inaugural cohort.
Travis Albritton
Albritton is associate dean for diversity, equity and inclusion and a clinical associate professor in the School of Social Work. He serves as director of the School of Social Work’s three-year Master of Social Work program, is chair of the school’s diversity committee and serves on the University’s Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Council.
Spencer Barnes
Barnes is an associate professor in the Hussman School of Journalism and Media, where his research examines how journalists produce and utilize dynamic visual communication products to facilitate an audience’s comprehension of the complex concepts and events described within news stories.
Dr. Kim Boggess
Boggess, a professor of obstetrics and gynecology and maternal fetal medicine, has a passion for faculty development. She joined the UNC School of Medicine faculty in 1999 and leads an active clinical and translational research program focusing on infection and inflammation complicating pregnancy.
Tanya Garcia
Garcia is an associate professor in the Gillings School of Global Public Health’s biostatistics department. While a doctoral student at Texas A&M, she discovered a genuine excitement for accurately modeling the progression of neurodegenerative diseases such as Huntington’s and Alzheimer’s.
Johna Register-Mihalik
Register-Mihalik is the incoming associate chair for curricula and faculty affairs and an associate professor in the College of Arts and Sciences’ exercise and sport science department. She is a core faculty member in the Matthew Gfeller Center and the Injury Prevention Research Center and is co-director of the STAR Heel Performance Laboratory.
