Remembering 9/11
The College Republicans spent an hour and a half setting up the flags late Wednesday night. The flags will remain by the Bell Tower until early Friday morning.
Thirteen years ago this week, approximately 3,000 people – including six Carolina alumni – died during the 9/11 terrorist attacks.
On Sept. 11, the UNC-Chapel Hill campus remembered in numerous ways, including the 9/11 Memorial, established by the Class of 2005 and located in the grove between Kenan Stadium and the George Watts Hill Alumni Center.
In addition, UNC’s College Republicans, in conjunction with the Young America Foundation, planted 3,000 flags around the Bell Tower to remember each victim as part of the “9/11 Never Forget” Memorial.
“Last night as we were putting the flags out we were joined by an Army veteran, now a senior at UNC,’’ Kathryn Walker, chair of the UNC College Republicans, said Thursday. “He saw what we were doing and simply wanted to help.
“It was a humbling experience, placing American flags to remember 9/11 along with someone who served this country in the aftermath of that day.”

“We put these flags out to honor and remember those who died during the attacks on September 11th, and for those who die for this country every day,” Walker said. “We put out these flags so we will never forget.”
