The newest Tar Heels are set to come together at New Student Convocation, the official start of the academic year.

The ceremony will be held at 5:30 p.m. Aug. 18, at the Dean E. Smith Center. The entire Carolina community, including family and friends of Carolina students, can watch the celebration on the University’s livestream page.

This year’s speakers include Chancellor Lee H. Roberts, Provost Chris Clemens, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Amy Johnson and Student Body President Jaleah Taylor. Tar Heel Voices will perform “Hark the Sound.”

The keynote speaker is Erin Matson, Carolina’s field hockey coach and most decorated player in program history. Matson won four national championships as a student-athlete and led the Tar Heels to another title last year in her first season as head coach.

The first day of classes is Aug. 19. Weeks of Welcome events will run through Sept. 1.
