Election Day is Nov. 5, and UNC-Chapel Hill has information about how to vote. (Jon Gardiner/UNC-Chapel Hill)

UNC-Chapel Hill provides a reminder of resources about registration and voting to help community members make a plan to vote either early, absentee, or in-person on Election Day this Nov. 5. To do so, you’ll need to be registered to vote by 5 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 11.

You can access voter registration resources online through the North Carolina State Board of Elections

You can register to vote online, by mail, and in person as a North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles customer.

Anyone with an Onyen may also get help registering to vote with TurboVote through Heel Life under the “Get Ready to Vote” tab in their profile.

You can register in person when you go to vote during the early voting period.

When mailing your voter registration form, please remember to postmark it no later than the deadline of Friday, Oct. 11. Forms can be mailed from any mailbox, including the U.S. Post Office located on the third floor of UNC Student Stores by the South Road entrance; Student Life & Leadership will provide postage for students who need to mail their application. You may also download the voter registration form to register to vote in other states.

Early voting

One-stop early voting in North Carolina (including Orange County) begins Thursday, Oct. 17, and ends at 3 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 2. You may register to vote and vote in-person at the same time during this period; however, you may not vote on Election Day if you are not registered by Oct. 11.

The early voting location closest to campus for Orange County voters will be Chapel of the Cross (304 E. Franklin St., next to Morehead Planetarium and Science Center). Here is information about early voting locations, dates and times, as well as information on requesting an absentee ballot soon.

Voting for those affected by Hurricane Helene

Students and employees impacted by the Helene disaster can visit www.ncsbe.gov/Helene. This webpage includes information for those who may have lost their other acceptable form of Voter ID in the disaster.

Voter ID

All voters are required to show a photo ID in order to vote; please see NCSBE for potential exemptions to the photo ID requirement. For information about what forms of identification are accepted, visit the voter ID page on the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.

As a result of recent litigation, the North Carolina Board of Elections will not accept the mobile UNC One Card as a form of voter ID, and the State Board has instructed county election officials of this decision. That means that students and employees may not use their mobile UNC One Card as a form of voter ID in the general election—neither for absentee voting nor for in-person voting.

This decision affects mobile One Card only. The physical student and employee UNC One Card IDs are still permitted to be used as voter ID.

Students and employees who only have a mobile One Card will need to make other arrangements to present other accepted forms of voter ID. Here are some resources available to students and employees:

  • How to Obtain a Physical One Card: Students and employees who need a physical One Card to serve as a voter ID may request one at the One Card Office. A physical One Card, without the chip technology of the standard One Card, is available at no cost for any faculty, staff or student who only obtained the mobile One Card.
  • Other Acceptable Forms of Voter ID: Students and employees may use any other acceptable forms of voter ID published by the State Board of Elections on its Voter ID webpage.

Visit the One Card website. If you have questions about your residency or voter registration generally, visit the North Carolina State Board of Elections website.
